The core of the Research Masters degree award is a coherent programme of supervised research which requires the student to successfully complete Masters-level research, the principal outcome of which is a submitted thesis in acceptable form and deemed to be of a satisfactory standard. The primary purpose of Masters level research is to develop in the student the skills and competencies required to conduct research.
The Research Masters degree programme may also include additional personal and professional development elements which develop the skills and competencies required for successful research and/or support the acquisition of generic or transferable skills. This may be provided via specific modules from the advanced educational programme of the University.
In the latter stages of the programme, those interested can apply to transfer to the PhD programme.
For further information please contact the School Manager, Mr. Adam Trodd.

Hide-The UCD School of Architecture offers three research masters degrees:
Masters in Urban and Building Conservation (MUBC)
Established over 25 years ago, this programme equips students to deal with all the complexities inherent in rehabilitation and restoration of buildings, cities and landscapes. Rooted strongly in conservation practice and policy, the programme also involves detailed research into the history and heritage of the built environment.
Masters in Urban Design (MUD)
With a strong international outlook, focusing on emerging and developing theory, best practice, and case studies in Europe, the US and the UK, this course seeks to understand the Irish urban condition and to create innovative and place-specific solutions for development and improvement.
Masters (by Research)
This masters programme is open to a wide range of topical pursuits which are arrived at between the student and their supervisor(s). Areas of current research include Sustainable Building Design and Performance, History and Theory of Architecture and Architectural Design.
Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD)
Making a substantial and original contribution to knowledge, normally leading to peer-reviewed publications, remains the core objective of doctoral studies. The PhD is a structured programme, designed to support students in achieving their academic and professional objectives. A PhD typically takes
four years full-time (six years part-time) to complete. Assessment for the award of a PhD is on the basis of a thesis and viva-voce exam.
