Course Objectives
This intensive eight-week, distance/blended programme developed for Irish doctors, pharmacists and nurses, is based on the well established Princess Alice Certificate in Essential Palliative Care running in the UK for many years. Candidates are facilitated in Limerick and Dublin. |
| Learning Outcomes |
The course is divided into five sections, each covering different principles and practice for delivering end-of-life
care in any setting:
• Caring for Patients with Pain
• Palliative Care & the Gastrointestinal System
• Breaking Bad News & Ethical Issues
• Emergencies in Palliative Care and Palliative Care in Non malignant Disease
• The Last 48 Hours of Life: Practical Issues & Bereavement |
| Methods of Assessment |
It is estimated that each section will require at least 10 hours of work to complete, including watching the DVD programme, reading the course handbook, and reviewing the questions at the end of each section. Learning is assessed through completion of a portfolio, written and oral examination. An online learning site has also been established to assist candidates with their studies.

Bursaries for doctors, nurses and pharmacists working in Hospice Friendly Hospitals may be available upon request from your local Hospice Friendly Hospitals (HfH) Co-ordinator.
In order to undertake the course, applicants must be qualified doctors, pharmacists or nurses and be working in a suitable practice setting e.g. in an acute hospital, nursing home or hospice and should have direct contact with patients requiring a palliative approach to care.
