Hide-The research degree programme in the School of Geology aims to train students to conduct research of high academic quality and to make original contributions in the subject.
Graduate Studies
The UCD School of Earth Sciences has a thriving international postgraduate community. We currently have around 30 students representing 12 nationalities. The majority of our postgraduates study for a PhD or MSc by research. We also run a MSc in Petroleum Geoscience, a one-year course commencing each September, which will build on significant existing in-house research expertise in frontier exploration, rift and hyper-extended basin evolution, reservoir sedimentology, geophysical imaging techniques, fault analysis and reservoir and fluid flow modelling.

Hide-Postgraduate research in the School covers a broad spectrum of specialities, as can be seen in our Research Groups, with a seamless transition between pure and applied research. We encourage research students to develop independent and original research. They are required to take ownership of their research and are encouraged to plan their research, in consultation with their academic supervisor(s) and relevant technical staff. They are not merely laboratory assistants who carry out the research directions of their supervisor. If you are interested in one of our PhD projects you should contact the specified research supervisor who will advise you further on the project and application procedure and deadlines.
If you are interested in conducting research with a friendly School in a vibrant city, this is the place for you. The School is always interested in receiving research proposals from intending postgraduate students and will endeavour to support them if supervision and facilities are adequate and funding can be obtained.
