Hide-Students gain knowledge of massage techniques to treat sports injuries both in a clinical setting and at an event. In addition students have an opportunity to achieve an ITEC Level 4 Certificate to practice as Sports Massage Therapists. This course provides the students with the knowledge and skills to treat non-pathological and pathological sports injuries. Graduates of the course are fully qualified to work as Sports Injury Therapists. It also includes the whole area of sports/industry awareness. Students have been successful in gaining places on physiotherapy and other related Degree courses in the UK. Through the practical and theoretical aspects of the course students learn how to perfect their therapy skills. The course is structured to ensure students provide first aid, pre and post event treatments to the college teams. Students gain professional practise in the college massage clinic working with clients.

All applicants' suitability is assessed on the merit of their application forms and by the means of a ten to fifteen minute interview. Interviews will take place in May and September depending on when you apply. All late applicants should check with the College Main Office as quite frequently, we have places still available on some courses in September. •Conducting Subjective and Objective Assessment - to include identifying and explaining bony structures associated with major joints, identifying and explaining soft tissue structures located at the major joints, joint end feels, predispositions to injury and disfunctions, factors that influence recovery from injury, treatment planning, postural types and deviations, pathophysiology of common injuries.

•Treatment Modalities to Support Soft Tissue Repair - to include the aims of treatment and treatment options during acute, sub-acute, and chronic stages of injury, treatment protocol, use of and adverse reactions to cryotherapy and thermotherapy.

•Sports Massage Techniques to Prevent and Manage Injury - to include a range of soft tissue techniques, protocols to follow for each technique, evaluating the effects of each technique, preparing clients, monitoring tissue response throughout treatments, adapting the techniques and treatment plan to meet the needs of each client, adapting own posture throughout the application to ensure safe and effective application and presenting aftercare advice to the client.

This provides the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence in the legislation, guidelines and practices relevant to a range of contexts in the sports industry.

•Sports Psychology 6N4465
To develop an understanding of the key psychological factors that influence participation and performance in sport.

•Sports Nutrition 6N4651
This provides the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence in the concepts and principles underpinning nutrition, energy sources and energy usage within an active, living, exercise, sport and weight management context.

•Safety Management 6N1782
This provides the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to design safety and risk management strategies, supervise implement and evaluate workplace safety policies.

•Customer Service 6N0697
This provides the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to direct quality customer service within a work, social or voluntary environment, independently and/or in a supervisory capacity.

•Work Experience 6N1946
This provides the learner with a comprehensive range of skills with detailed theoretical understanding of a general supervisory nature of the work placement in a specific vocational area.


Students can avail of the following add on options during the year at an additional cost:

•Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness (CEHF) accredited by the University of Limerick

•Conversion Course is expected to be offered to students who meet specific criteria.

The CEHF graduate predominantly gains employment as a group fitness instructor and /or as a gym instructor in gyms and fitness clubs, some of which are hotel based or in community settings.
