Hide-Mechatronic Engineering is a multi-disciplinary integrated approach to product design and development that has become a key enabling resource for gaining competitive edge in the modern manufacturing era. Consequently, it has had a significant influence in the nature of engineering education and training worldwide. As an emerging engineering discipline, Mechatronic Engineering integrates precision mechanical engineering, control theory, computer science and electronics as applicable to:
•product design process, for creation of more functional and adaptable products;
•process control and automation;
•quality control/management, and;
•system efficiency enhancement, including ergonomics.
Programme BN422 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronics (NFQ level 8) is therefore targeted towards those working in the above areas and allied industry, who have already achieved the award of Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics (NFQ level 7) or equivalent engineering qualification.
The programme is delivered over 2 years in a Part-Time Mode. The subject areas covered include: Mathematics & Analytical Methods, Mechanics & Materials, Control Systems, Microcontroller/Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, Industrial Robotics & Vision Inspection, Industrial Networks & Distributed Systems, Advanced Computer Aided Design, Sustainable Energy Systems, and Enterprise Resources Management.
Project work is a unique and substantive element in the programme, and is undertaken over three semesters. In such project work, students will synthesize the knowledge gained and skills developed in the course work, including project management skills, to develop viable project proposals, and implement such projects within the designated timeframes.
Course Delivery
This course will be offered over 2 years in four semesters with a possibility of one additional summer session between Semester 2 and Semester 3. The lecture content will be provided as synchronous online lectures which are recorded and can be viewed again at a time convenient to the student.
Students will be required to attend ITB for at least three practical days per semester, these normally take place on a Saturday. Tutorials and continuous assessment will be provided online as applicable.
Occasionally students may be expected to attend accelerated delivery of certain practical aspects of course modules. However, the time and duration of such arrangements will be notified and agreed upon in a timely time
