Aims and Objectives:

Learners will gain a full understanding of the different theories in child development. Candidates should be able to recognise the differences between these theories and identify where they contrast and complement each other. They will identify the practical implementation of these theories to everyday events in the ECCE. Child development theory should impact on how a candidate interacts with children and approaches the child’s holistic development. An understanding of theory will also aid the candidate in the practical understanding and implementation of behaviour management techniques.

Throughout this course the candidate will grasp the importance of communication with the children they work with along with colleagues and other stakeholders in the ECCE setting. They will also gain an understanding of the importance of self-evaluation and on-going learning.

Project:

For this project learners are required to complete three sections:

1). Learning activities and observations of those activities – Learners are required to devise 4 learning activities which aid development in each area, Physical, Intellectual, Language, Social and Emotional.

Learners must carry out an observation of each learning activities.

The points below outline the information that will need to be included in each recorded observation:

For each observation you are required to devise a learning activity to aid the specific area of development (physical, intellectual, language, social and emotional).

•You must give a detailed outline of each plan.
•Clearly state the reason for each learning activity by linking to Child Development Theory.
•Give an account of your observation of the learning activity.
•Evaluate your own personal role within the learning activity and evaluate the role of other team members if they were involved.
•Evaluate the children’s/child’s learning, did this learning activity aid development in the specific area as you had intended?
•Analysis and recommendations, what changes would you make if you were required to carry out this task in the future.
•Conclusion

2). Understanding of current legislation and national practice – In relation to current legislation and national practice:

•Identify the needs of children in the child care environment. Outline the skills required to meet these needs.
•Identify the needs of parents in relation to the childcare environment. Outline the skills required to meet these needs.
•Identify the needs of colleagues and all those working in the early childcare setting. Outline the skills required to meet these needs.
In relation to the above needs, suggest personal learning and development goals as well as team learning and development goals which will ensure these needs are being met.

3). Evaluation of skills – Give an overall evaluation of your personal practice with regard to meeting child development needs. Outline your skills encompassing the areas of:

•Observation skills

•Communication skills with
– Child / children
– Staff and other members of the childcare team
– Parents

•Understanding of current legislation

•Understanding of child development theory

•Suggest ways to improve your ability /knowledge in the above areas.

Exam

This will be a supervised examination which will assess the learners ability to recall, apply theory and show an understanding of the different concepts drawn from the module.
