Student’s optional certification, as listed above, will be provided by the Emergency Services Training Institute – www.esti.ie. The ESTI conduct real life Emergency Services interviews with students, refining the essential interview skills techniques needed in this specialist area.
Students are sent on work experience as an essential part of the course.
Work Experience
Each student will gain practical experience while working in areas such as voluntary ambulance and private ambulance services, industrial fire services and related industries. Relationships can be built up between employers and students which can lead to full-time employment on completion of the course.

Hide-Applications are invited any time up to the end of August. However, it is advisable to apply before mid-August to ensure places are still available on the course. All applicants' suitability is assessed on the merit of their application forms and by the means of a ten to fifteen minute interview. Interviews will take place in May and September depending on when you apply. All late applicants should check with the College Main Office as quite frequently, we have places still available on some courses in September. The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to promote and maintain safety and health in a work environment.
•Anatomy and Physiology 5N0749
This component examines the structure and function of the human body and the interrelationship between its systems.
•Teamworking 5N1367
Students will analyse the roles, responsibilities, characteristics and skills of team members, including leaders, coaches and trainers.
•Psychology 5N0754
This subject will equip learners through a range of theory which can be applied to their own lives and also to a social care setting. This unit introduces psychological perspectives and gives the learner an insight into understanding and interpreting interpersonal behaviour.
•Emergency Department Care Skills 5N4890
Students will be equipped with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide care and support within an Emergency Department under the supervision of a registered nurse.
•Medical Terminology 5N2428
This module will equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the range of medical terminology applicable and relevant specifically to a role in a medical practice, clinic or hospital context.

Learner will gain the competence to provide and co-ordinate first aid in the workplace in compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and the associated Guide to these Regulations.

Learners will acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to use a word processing application to produce documents in a variety of contexts to a professional standard.

Students will examine work organisations and personal career opportunities in a particular vocational area, to include consideration of work related issues and needs.
Students may also be provided with an exercise class to ensure adequate fitness levels are both reached and maintained.

| Entry Requirements |
Practical experience with a voluntary group is desirable but not essential, Leaving Certificate, L.C.A. or equivalent. All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability. Mature students without formal qualifications are also welcome to apply. |

The State ambulance and fire services and private ambulance companies look for qualified staff to recruit. Opportunities also exist in other industries, e.g. Cork Airport and Port of Cork response teams, pharmaceutical and chemical companies in the Cork region, Oil Refinery, Local On-call Services and direct employment as Emergency Medical Technicians.
Fire Safety and Emergency Response training will enhance employment opportunities in the broader labour market where such skills would be an invaluable asset, e.g. Caretakers, Safety Officers, Duty Managers etc.
