Entry criteria
- The module is open to radiographers and radiation therapists.
- Candidates are required to arrange for a suitably qualified supervisor to oversee their clinical experience [radiologist, physician, IV qualified radiographer, or equivalent].
- All candidates must have access to a broadband internet connection to study and engage with the online material. A dial-up facility will not be sufficient.
- All students must check in on Blackboard (the UCD online learning hub) regularly.
- Required attendance will be confirmed in due course.

What Will I Learn?
Course description
The UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science is pleased to offer this professional module in IV administration for Radiographers. More 600 students have now successfully completed this module, and we continue to adapt it to meet the needs of students and the clinical healthcare environment.

Two days of student attendance at UCD are required.

This short course provides an appropriate theoretical background for Radiographers and Radiation Therapists undertaking intravenous administration in an imaging department. In conjunction with a supervised schedule of administered injections, the course facilitates the development of practical competence in intravenous administration.

Course structure
The course comprises five elements, each of which must be completed in order to be awarded the associated module credits.
1. Taught lectures
2. Practical demonstrations on IV arms
3. Student-led recommendations on amendments to their departmental IV protocol
4. Submission of record of clinical practice
5. Submission written piece of coursework

The module has been approved by UCD as Master’s level at 10 ECTS, and this equates to 20 IIRRT (Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy) CPD points.

Course Features
• Equips participants with practical ability in intravenous administration.
• Provides theoretical training for radiographers and radiation therapists undertaking intravenous administration in imaging departments.
• Two day attendance, supplemented by e-learning.

Useful information
• All candidates study intravenous agents used for x-ray and CT examinations.
• Students will then choose to attend a lecture on either RNI / PET or MRI agents.
• Further aspects of practical administration such as using automatic injectors, dealing with adverse incidents, delegation of prescribing responsibilities, and administration protocols are all included.
• A practical training session with IV radiographer trainers will take place during the two taught days.

• This module carries 10 ECTS at Masters level.
• Successful candidates must demonstrate they have developed an appropriate knowledge base.
• Attendance is required for both days of the course.
• There will also be a formative assessment on the 2nd day of the course which is a written short answer 30 minute exam, and whilst it does not contribute to the final grade it must be successfully completed.

The end of module assessment will be based on the following.
1. Submission of written course work (60%),
2. A copy of the departmental IV protocol together with a brief outline (500 words) of proposed changes or amendments (40%),

Note: A completed and signed Record of Clinical Practice, documenting 40 injections under supervision must be submitted.
