Alternative qualifications for undergraduate programmes

Ulster University will consider the following alternative qualifications for entry to an undergraduate degree or honours degree course:

◦two A levels (grades A-E) and three passes at GCSE (grades A-C/4-9) or an Intermediate GNVQ or two Double Award Vocational GCSEs

◦BTEC National qualifications awarded by the Edexcel Foundation

◦Cambridge International Pre-U Diploma

◦Canbridge Technicals

◦OCR National qualifications

◦Highers or Advanced Highers of the Scottish Qualifications Authority

◦European, International or Welsh Baccalaureate

◦Irish Leaving Certificate at higher level with passes in four approved subjects at grade D/H6

◦satisfactory completion of an approved Access programme

◦any foundation degree awarded by Ulster University

◦for entry to Art and Design degree programmes, satisfactory completion of a full-time foundation programme in Art and Design, of not less than one academic year in duration.

No subject may be counted at more than one level except in the case of the A level or Applied A level combined with the Intermediate GNVQ. Qualifications not listed will be considered on merit.

About

The BSc (Hons) Accounting and Advertising programme meets the needs of those wishing to pursue a career in business with an interest in Accounting and Advertising as specialist areas. The programme allows students to combine two of the principle subject areas from the business arena and to develop the skills and expertise necessary for an aspiring professional career in Accounting or Advertising. In addition it provides the basis for graduates wishing to take a postgraduate programme up to doctoral level.

The programme seeks to provide the key business knowledge and skills essential for a graduate, seeking a managerial career in general business or a specialist interest in Accounting and/or Advertising.

The development of relevant employability skills is at the core of the BSc Hons Accounting and Advertising degree and a variety of opportunities exist within the programme and its modules, to develop such skills. These skills include, for example, Creative Thinking, Project Management, Strategic Planning, Business start-up, Problem Solving and Interpersonal skills as well as specific Accounting and Advertising skills.

The BSc Hons Accounting and Advertising programme has three Accounting and three Advertising modules in each academic year. Between first and second year students will have sampled the main disciplines of Accounting, Economics Human Resource Management and Advertising.

Year 1 contains six compulsory modules of study, including an extended induction module where you are introduced to university teaching and learning methods. This helps you to prepare for the acquisition of the personal and interpersonal skills needed to enhance career opportunity. The first year modules provide a broad knowledge of business subjects as a sound basis for further study. The modules studied in first year are: Introduction to Economics, Principles of Accounting, Organisation and Management Studies, Advertising Theory and Practice, Information and Studies Skills Management and Principles of Marketing.

In the second year students follow the Accounting modules of Management Accounting 1, Financial Accounting 2 and Project Management. The Advertising modules are Client Services in Advertising, Marketing Communications and Copywriting Practice and Critiques.

The third year may be spent undertaking a programme of work experience, usually of 48 weeks duration. Many students undertake their placement in the USA or the Republic of Ireland. Placement provides exposure to alternative business cultures and corresponding protocols. Successful completion of the placement year leads to the award of the Diploma in Professional Practice or a Diploma in International Academic Studies. In the final year students continue with the three Accounting modules of Management Accounting 2, Financial Accounting 2 and Financial Decision Making. The three Advertising modules are Advertising Management, Marketing Management and Advertising Campaigns.

You have also the option to study abroad for a year; satisfactory completion of a study abroad year will lead to the award of the Diploma in International Academic Studies.
