This course prepares students for a career in nursing. The design of course combines aspects of nursing theory and practice, it teaches an understanding of the needs of patients, it develops communications, intellectual and caring skills. Nursing Studies enables the students to become confident, capable and equipped to practice effectively in constantly changing hospital and community-based environments. |

Certification:
The certificate awarded to successful students is the QQI Certificate in Nursing Studies (Level 5). In addition, all students are given the opportunity to obtain Certificates in First Aid, Sign Language and Manual Handling and to repeat one or two subjects in the Leaving Certificate. |
| Alternative Entry |
Mature students are very welcome on all courses in O'Fiaich Institute of further Education and the number of mature students is rising steadily. Some mature students are eligible for VTOS scheme (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme). |

The course provides students with a working knowledge of hospitals and nursing homes allowing them to apply for a nurse career position. Students may also have the opportunity to progress to a variety of health-related fields e.g. Healthcare, Social Care, Paramedic, Childcare, Garda Siochana. A number of universities and colleges in both Ireland and England now accept the QQI Certificate in Nursing Studies, with specified results, as an alternative entrance requirement into nurse training. A large number of student completing the nursing studies course every year progress to universities and college in Ireland to complete their nursing training. Ó Fiaich Institute of Further Education also has links with many Universities in England and Scotland and a large number of our students have completed their nurse training there.
