Hide-In this course we build on the practical skills and applied theory developed in our ordinary degree to give you a deeper understanding of more complex engineering concepts.
Increased emphasis in the practical workings of industrial organisations will prepare you for roles in management should you follow that career pathway. We also consider energy and environmental issues to give you an appreciation of energy usage and conservation.
Computer analysis plays an increasing role, and we use finite element analysis to study stresses in components, and optimisation to improve the design of components. Mechanism simulation allows you to analyse the forces generated within individual mechanisms.
The final project thesis is an important aspect of the course, allowing you to demonstrate your ability to apply the knowledge and analytical skills gained in other subjects. Projects may be based in the areas of design or simulation, alternatively they may be experimental in nature. Typical student projects would involve the design and development of a prototype braking mechanism, development of a robotic machining system or measurement of impeller characteristics.
Entry Requirements: Over 50% average grade at level 7 in BEng Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Applicants with other qualifications and/or relevant industrial experience will also be considered.
