Course Content This Certificate level course is offered by the Department of Modern History, NUI Maynooth. The course examines the ‘local dimension of Ireland’s past’.

Course Aims The course aims to provide participants interested in local history with an opportunity to obtain formal training in the subject. This course sets out to provide students with a methodological approach to the research and writing of local history.
Subjects Taught Module 1

An introduction to academic and community-based local history in Ireland; Comparative traditions in other countries; Contemporary developments and challenges in the field of local history

Module 2

Introduction to primary and secondary sources; Guidelines for critical appraisal of sources;

Guidance on location and consultation of selected major sources

Module 3

Presenting Local History: Writing conventions; Oral/visual presentations; Fieldwork

Careers or Further Progression The NUI Certificate in Local History is often used as an Access or Progression route to the BA Local Studies MH803. The credits gained on the certificate course can be used for Recognition of Prior Learning on this part-time degree.
