The Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's has a long-established international reputation for interdisciplinary research exploring the social, political, cultural and geographical factors that have influenced the people of this island and its diasporas. Research is conducted into the physical and political environment of the north of Ireland, mapping its unique influence on wider Irish and British identities.

We are one of the leading centres in the world for research into contemporary Irish identities, culture, conflict, public space, social memory and commemoration, and act as a research hub for academics at Queen's from a range of disciplines. We presently host two major research projects examining political rituals and symbols in Ireland with a particular interest in the conflict in the North.
