• Applicants must have at least three years' experience in clinical nursing at time of attending the first day of class in semester one
• Applicants must be employed in a teaching environment prior to commencing the course and for the duration of the course
• Other criteria to be used in the assessment of the application include number of years of experience, and evidence of ongoing professional development

Possessing this enhanced level of expertise will enable you to become a valuable member of the team that supports students who are undertaking both undergraduate and specialist programmes.

Who is the programme for?
This programme is aimed at preparing the registered nurses to develop a repertoire of knowledge and skills for teaching nursing students who are candidates on the An Bord Altranais Register. The programme is particularly targeted at nurses who already hold a masters degree in nursing or a related area. It aims to prepare the nurse to assume the role of registered nurse tutor (RNT).

Programme objectives
The MSc Nursing (Education) aims to build upon and advance the registered nurse’s repertoire of knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional values, in order to prepare the nurse to assume the role of a nurse teacher. Emphasis within this programme is given to understanding and using the principles of cognitive, affective and psychomotor elements of education within the teaching practicum.

The specific aims of the programme are to enable students to:
• Critically appraise the relationship between various knowledge forms that mediate nursing or midwifery knowledge
• Competently plan, assess and evaluate learning in the clinical practicum and the classroom through a variety of methods
• To equip the prospective nurse teacher with the skills necessary to create a quality clinical learning environment
• Demonstrate ability to participate in and contribute to philosophy of education and its effect on curriculum innovation
• Assess and evaluate clinical competencies in accordance with An Bord Altranais guidelines, requirements and standards and legislation
• Demonstrate growth in knowledge and understanding of approaches to education and practice theory drawing on a broad range of disciplines to inform nurse/midwife education
• Design a curriculum to meet educational and professional needs which is flexible and responsive
• Explore the environment in which students learn and give academic guidance and support to nursing/midwifery students which will enable nurses/midwives to practice within a multidisciplinary framework.

How will I benefit?
The curriculum is designed to enhance your knowledge and skills particularly in the field of education studies. It enables nurses who wish to specialise in nursing/midwifery education and to register as Nurse Tutors with An Bord Altranais. The programme also provides an opportunity for students to examine and analyse philosophies and theories of education from both a historical and a contemporary perspective.

On successful completion of the programme, you will receive an MSc Nursing (Nurse Education) from the UCD School of Nursing Midwifery and Health Systems. The programme is recognised nationally and is validated by An Bord Altranais.

Particular strengths of the programme include:
• A long history of producing high quality graduates since its inception in 1960 many of whom are now working as Lecturers, Educational Facilitators and in management roles within the health services
• Access to classes within our many programmes for teaching practice
• Extensive use of IT in supporting the teaching environment of the programme
• Access to excellent facilities for lectures and a state of the art library.

Teaching methods
A range of methods will be used in an effort to expose the students to innovative and dynamic teaching/learning processes, these include lectures, small group discussions, blended learning, case presentations and clinical techniques as well as problem based learning (PBL). BlackBoard, a virtual learning environment, is used to post class notes, host web discussions and to store forms required by students throughout the programme. Assessment will be both formative and summative and the methods employed will include essay, examination, continuous assessment with varying components and case conference. Students will be expected to post their assignments electronically to BlackBoard.

Information technology
It is essential that you have access to a personal computer and an email account as communication with students is primarily undertaken by email. Lecture handouts/announcements are made available to students via Blackboard (a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that supports online learning and teaching) and/or via email. Messages from the university regarding examination policy and procedures are also sent via email.

This is a two year (academic) year programme, broken down into four semesters. Assessments are varied and occur at intervals throughout and at the end of the semesters.

The MSc Nursing (Nurse Education) enables students to gain a broad and deep understanding of subjects relevant to the education of nursing students.

Particular emphasis is placed on recent national and international research findings, policy documents and recommendations aimed at ensuring optimal outcomes for nurse education.
