Applications are normally accepted from November until 30th June for entry the following September. Applications after the 30th June closing date will only be accepted subject to available space and usually application charges will apply. Applications are processed in batches and we aim to respond to all applications within 2 weeks – this may be longer during peak times.

Early applications are encouraged, and most applications are made before applicants know their final results. Applicants who meet the entry requirements (i.e. are currently studying for a specialist accounting undergraduate degree or a general business undergraduate degree with an accounting major/specialism) are likely to receive a provisional offer for the programme (usually subject to gaining a 2H1/1H in their degree). On such applications mark your results as pending.

Once a firm offer is made, or a provisional offer is automatically converted into a firm offer, applicants are required to pay a €500 non-refundable deposit to secure a place. Unfortunately because of demand for the programme, places cannot be held open indefinitely. You will receive a reminder email from us. Applications made after the closing date are also subject top the €500 non-refundable deposit to secure their place.

In some instances, applicants with 2H2 degrees may be offered places subject to available space, such applications are not usually considered until August of the year for September entry.

• In some instances graduates who have achieved a 2nd class honours grade 2 in the degrees listed above and who can demonstrate a high level of performance in the accounting related subjects may be offered a place.

• If you are taking the programme with the intention of gaining an exemption from CAP 2 (Chartered Accountants Ireland) then you will need to be exempt from all of CAP 1 upon joining the programme. If you do not have full exemptions from CAP 1, see the section on ‘Exemptions’
• If you have not studied as an undergraduate in Ireland you will need to demonstrate that you have:
o Previously studied financial reporting using IFRS/IAS i.e. international accounting standards and regulations
o Previously studied taxation in a jurisdiction with a similar tax system to Ireland (the UK for example).

The MB in Accounting is a challenging one-year taught programme aimed at preparing business graduates for entry into the accountancy profession. The programme is a fast track to a career in accountancy, earning generous exemptions from the professional institutes (for example Chartered Accountants Ireland offer successful graduates an exemption from the CAP 2 series of examinations).

On the programme, participants share experiences and knowledge to maximise learning. WIT prides itself on its staff/student interaction and the participatory and interactive learning model creates an exciting and stimulating environment. The intensive nature of the programme and its emphasis on teamwork means that one will learn not just with your class group or team, but from them as well.

Special Feature
The MB in Accounting programme at Waterford Institute of Technology provides an outstanding education in accountancy for graduates who wish to continue their studies to an advanced level. The programme is intensive, with a strong emphasis on self-directed learning. On the programme, participants share experiences and knowledge to maximise learning. WIT prides itself on its staff/student interaction; and the participatory and interactive learning creates an exciting and stimulating environment.
Mandatory modules concentrate on the core accounting disciplines: financial reporting, management accounting, taxation, finance and auditing.

These are supplemented by a number of elective modules which allow the perspective student to broaden their accounting knowledge into emerging and non-traditional areas. Elective modules include strategic information management, the reporting environment and strategy & business analysis.

Students are also required to complete a dissertation. There is considerable latitude in the choice of subject area, its scope and methodology. Research methods modules support the dissertation and tutors appointed to each individual student provide direction. The dissertation is due for presentation in mid-August.

If you have a degree in accounting (BSc Accounting or BA Accounting, for example) or a general business degree with an accounting major/specialisation and you would like to pursue a career in accounting, then this programme has been designed with you in mind.

This is not surprising as it is one of the key objectives of the course. All of the big 4 firms (Pricewaterhouse Coopers, KMPG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte) have subsequently employed MBS in Accounting students for their graduate training programmes. Upon completion of the training contract students; are then found in a variety of roles ranging from practice to industry to the public sector.
