Hide-Programme Content
The programme is modular in structure combing theory and clinical practice modules. The programme is four calendar years. It is modular in structure and comprises of both theory and practice modules.
The theoretical content aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to underpin their professional practice. The theoretical component is composed of two thirds – Nursing Studies, one sixth – Biological Sciences and one sixth Social Sciences. A key objective of the programme is to examine the application of theoretical concepts to nursing practice applicable to persons with an Intellectual Disability.
Practice placements allow students to draw and integrate the knowledge acquired in the theory sessions. A minimum of 76 weeks is spent in both residential; educational and training; respite and community based practice settings. The practice placements provides students with an opportunity to learn the skills of nursing which is supported by lecturers from the Department of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies. A significant feature of the programme is that students undertake an internship of 36 weeks (including 2 weeks annual leave) in the fourth year of the programme.
