Participants undertaking this module would normally have completed Advanced Clinical Skills One module or equivalent. This module is designed to form part of the professional and academic development of the Registered Nurse working in medical and surgical areas or with clients who have complex healthcare needs. Participants will be given the opportunity to enhance their patient assessment skills using client history, interpretation of objective and subjective data and symptom analysis. Participants will gain knowledge and skills in monitoring and recognising the deteriorating patient and red flag symptoms and in the management of the deteriorating patient as set put in COMPASS Training (HSE). This module will also develop student knowledge and skill in relation to key clinical interventions and communicating about complex health care needs. It is also part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences/Professional Studies (see page 11).

• Respiratory workshop Respiratory assessment and interpretation of respiratory assessment
data; Blood gas analysis and interpretation, Management of CPAP and biPaP, Management of
underwater seal drainage;
• Cardiovascular workshop: Fluid balance, IV replacement, haemodynamic monitoring,
Interpretation of blood results (Electrolytes, FBC, urinary output and fluid balance)
• Neurological workshop: AVPU and Glasgow Coma Scale assessment and interpretation
• Compass workshop: Scenario based assessment, recognition and management of the deteriorating patient (respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, sepsis, use of the NEWS assessment and escalation protocol.
• Communication workshop: Effective communication skills in recording and reporting in rapid patient deterioration scenarios using recognised frameworks such as MEWS and ISBAR; effective communication skills in relaying information regarding deteriorating patients to family members/relevant others.
