Hide-The French Revolution, 1789-1815
This short course outlines the trajectory of the French Revolution from its inception (1789) through to the final defeat of the Napoleonic Empire (1815). Sweeping away a defective Ancient Régime legitimised by the “absolute” power of the Bourbon dynasty, the revolution heralded a new era of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” for the people of France. In turn, however, the revolutionaries extemporised a reign of terror that included a bloody civil war and the infamous work of Madame Guillotine. Thereafter, the direction and legacy of the revolution fell to the young General Bonaparte, who went on to conquer most of Europe, without necessarily upholding the democratic principles upon which his success had been founded. In addressing each of these topics in turn, this course examines the colourful history of modern France and the impact of the French Revolution on the wider European polity.
