Hide-An Analysis of the Image in the twentieth and twenty-first
century
This course will provide students with an introduction to some key movements in the history of European and American Art. Over the eight-week period the aim is to build a vocabulary for the discussion of artwork made from the late 19th to the early and mid 20th century. The program will provide introductions to Impressionism, Cubism Dadaism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Women artists, and Photography. Participants will be encouraged with creative and independent thinking. The aim of the course is to develop visual literacy and awareness, as well as a range of critical and analytical skills in the discussion of the politics and aesthetics of the image. The course requires the reading and discussion of a series of accompanying texts as well as discussion of a series of short documentary films. There will also be a gallery visit scheduled during the course in order to connect to the field of contemporary visual art.
