Hide-Contemporary Philosophy: Thinking of Power and the
Power of Thought
This course in contemporary European thought is geared toward those who have already begun reading and engaging with philosophy along with anyone interested in thinking deeply about the current world-political situation. The nature of the relationship between individual human beings and systems of power has been a central theme in contemporary thought. Beginning with Existentialism and working right through to current philosophy, participants in this course will engage in discussions of works from Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone DeBeauvoir through to Luce Irigaray and Alain Badiou. Fundamental questions of economic relations, gender relations, and political relations will be discussed based on short weekly readings from these most influential thinkers of our era.
