Going to College Podcast Series Independent.ie Education Podcast

The Going to College podcast series will be giving you advice and information on dealing with the Leaving Cert results, CAO offers, preparing for college and everything else you can expect over the next few weeks.

It’s a busy, stressful and exciting time for you and your family and the Going to College podcast series will help you navigate some of the journey that lies ahead.

Ep 1: Preparing for the Leaving Cert Results

On the first episode, It’s Leaving Cert results time and to help you prepare for the big day, the expectations, pressures and hopes, presenter John Walshe, is joined by guidance counsellor, Betty McLaughlin, QQI’s Colette Harrison, and UCD Student Union’s Education Officer, Stephen Crosby.

Ep 2 CAO Offers: what to do next and what your options are

The CAO first round offers are out and it's mainly good news for students as 3 out of 4 who applied for Level 8 courses have got their first preference.

On the second episode of the Going to College series, presenter John Walshe, is joined by guidance counsellor, Betty McLaughlin, QQI CEO Padraig Walsh, and UCD Student Union’s Education Officer, Stephen Crosby, to discuss your options and next steps if you did/didn't get your first preference.

If you did get your first choice, you have until August 24th to accept by logging on to CAO.ie and ticking ‘I accept’ but if you’re deferring you need to contact the college directly.

However, if you didn't receive an offer, this is only the beginning and courses will become available up to October. Don’t forget about the PLC option as well to see if there is something that might be suitable for you.

Ep 3 The CAO 2nd Round Offers are out, here’s what you can do

The second round CAO offers have just been issued but what are the options and alternative choices that you can make at this stage?

On the third episode of the Going to College series, presenter John Walshe, is joined by guidance counsellor, Betty McLaughlin, QQI CEO Padraig Walsh, and UCD Student Union’s Education Officer, Stephen Crosby, to discuss what to do next.

Some students have been lucky enough to get a higher preference offer in this round but if you haven't got an offer in this round, look at the options in the PLCs and check out qualifax.ie which lists all the PLC courses available.

Ep 4 How to survive and make the most out of college life

It's an exciting but also daunting time as you get ready for the change from secondary school to college life and doubly so if you're living away from home.

On the fourth and final episode of the Going to College series, presenter John Walshe, is joined by guidance counsellor, Betty McLaughlin, QQI’s Colette Harrison, and UCD Student Union’s Education Officer, Stephen Crosby, on surviving and making the most out of your college years.

"Putting yourself out of your comfort zone is a really good thing," says Stephen Crosby and he advises students to get involved, especially in clubs and societies. "There is something for everyone and you develop a network of friends for life."

With 1-in-6 students not continuing their course after first year, feeling connected and that you belong is vital. And if you are finding it stressful and difficult to manage, there are faculty advisers and students union officers to help you through it.

Enjoy yourself, work hard, be sociable, expand your horizons and if you can get the balance right these will be some of the best years of your life.
