Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics
Students who do not meet the H4 grade in Higher Level Mathematic may sit SETU Carlow’s special mathematics examination. This special pre-honours degree mathematics examination is considered equivalent to Higher Level Mathematics and will be held in August / September each year as required. To be eligible for entry to the programme applicants must achieve a pass in this pre-honours degree mathematics examination. A refresher mathematics course may be offered prior to the exam.

Second Chance Maths Examination
Maths Entry Exam
The Maths Entry Exam scheme is designed to assist CAO applicants who have not achieved the required grade in mathematics for entry to SETU. It provides a ‘second chance’ opportunity to achieve the minimum maths entry requirements.
Attaining a qualifying standard in the SETU Maths Entry Exam does not in itself guarantee a place on any course in SETU. The cut-off points and normal eligibility criteria will still apply. The SETU maths exam results count only with respect to explicit maths requirements. Offers are subject to available places in the next available round of CAO offers.
Upon application for the maths exam, it is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that they meet all other criteria for their chosen programme. The University will not check eligibility criteria until after the maths paper has been completed. The maths entry exam is comparable to the leaving certificate ordinary level paper. The content of this paper will be based on the leaving certificate (ordinary level) syllabus.
Note - Once you have applied through the CAO for a course at SETU you can sit the Maths Entry Exam at either the SETU Waterford or SETU Carlow campus. The result attained can be used for eligibility for relevant courses on all SETU campus’ regardless of which campus you sat the exam on. This means that you can use the Maths Entry Exam result for any of the SETU campuses.

Entry requirements for Honours Bachelor Degrees (Level 8)
This link module can be used in place of a sixth Leaving Certificate subject and will be accepted as meeting the six subject eligibility requirements for entry to honours degree
courses.

QQI FET Applicants General Information
Students who have completed a full QQI-FET award at Level 5, and achieved at least three distinctions, are eligible to apply through CAO for entry to Year 1 on to Level 6, 7 and 8 courses. Students who have completed a full QQI-FET award at Level 6 may be eligible to enter Year 2.
The maximum possible points awarded through QQI-FET is 390. The scoring system only applies where all of the requirements for the major award are met i.e. where the named component awards specified have been achieved to a minimum of 120 credits.
Progression Scheme
The Progression Scheme is an additional opportunity for students who successfully complete a QQI FET Award in a partner Colleges of Further Education and Training College/Centre to gain entry to SETU programmes. Mature Student Applications
A mature student is someone who is at least 23 years of age on 1 January of the year of entry to an undergraduate course and who may not meet the normal admission requirements. Applications are made through the CAO before the 1 February or before late application deadline of 1 May 2024. Applicants are assessed based on the information they enter on their CAO application. Note: You must apply for nursing and music courses by 1 February 2024.
Selection Process – Nursing Applications
Mature applicants for nursing courses will receive correspondence under separate cover from the Nursing Careers Centre (Public Appointments Service - PAS). For full details on

Mature Applicant – Change of Mind
The Change of Mind facility becomes available after 1 May and the closing date is 1 July.
The Change of Mind facility affords mature applicants an opportunity to change the order of preference only of their course choices. If applicants introduce a new programme to their list of choices by way of Change of Mind, they will compete for a place on that programme based on their Leaving Certificate or equivalent results only. They will not compete as a mature applicant.
Graduates of a Level 7 Ordinary Degree Programme in Civil Engineering from SETU Carlow or any other Institutes of Technology who achieve a minimum GPA of 50% or equivalent and who have obtained a minimum of 70% in Mathematics in Year 3 of their Ordinary Degree are eligible for entry to the programme.
Graduates of a Level 7 Ordinary Degree Programme in Civil Engineering from SETU Carlow or any other Institutes of Technology who achieve a minimum GPA of 50% or equivalent, but have not obtained a minimum of 70% in Mathematics in Year 3 of their Ordinary Degree, can sit a pre-honours degree mathematics examination in SETU Carlow. It is envisaged this pre-honours degree mathematics examination will be held in late August early September each year, where required. To be eligible for entry to the programme applicants must achieve a minimum grade of 70% in this pre-honours degree mathematics examination. A refresher mathematics course is offered prior to the exam.
Non-standard application
A non-standard application is one that does not meet the definition of a standard application.
The special categories are:

Applicants wishing to make a non-standard application must select the relevant category when applying to the CAO.

Be sure to complete any action well in advance of closing dates. You should avoid making an application close to a closing date. No extensions to closing dates will be allowed and all application fees are non-refundable.
LATE APPLICATIONS
Late Applications are those which are received after 5pm on 1 February 2024. The closing date for late applications is 5pm on 1 May 2024, subject to the restrictions listed on page 3 of the 2024 CAO Handbook. The online facility for late applications opens on the 5 March 2024 at 12:00 noon - a fee of €60 applies.
Exceptional Late Applications (Exception to the timetable)
The exceptional closing date of 22 July at 5pm applies only to applicants who are registered as an undergraduate student on 1 May 2024 in any year in any one of the participating HEIs (subject to the exclusions listed below). In order to avail of the Exceptional Late Application facility you must have entered the HEI through the CAO system. This is an exceptional late closing date and all steps must be completed by 5pm on 22 July. No changes may be made after this date.
If you did not enter your current course through the CAO system, you must first contact the Admissions Office of the HEI to which you wish to apply and they will inform you if you may submit an application direct to the institution.
Exclusions:
You may submit a late application only for entry to courses other than your existing course. If you wish to repeat the year in the same course you must arrange this within your HEI.
Mary Immaculate College Limerick, Marino Institute of Education, Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick and Maynooth University have special procedures in place in the case of current or previous students who wish to apply for entry to another course in the same HEI. Such applicants must contact their Admissions Office to determine the application procedure. However, if you are a student in another HEI and you wish to apply to any of these five HEIs, you should apply through CAO.
