The overall aim of the programme is to introduce the learner to the area of Mental Health, Psychology and Sociology. This course is designed to provide an introduction of the theory and practice involved in mental health support within the social care industry. This course aims to encourage learners to explore and develop their knowledge of social issues, and to develop a new understanding to the approaches and supports available within mental health services.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate with five O6 grades (or five passes pre 2017) or equivalent is the standard entry requirement for Level 5 courses. Leaving Certificate Applied or QQI Level 4 Award are also acceptable on the majority of Level 5 courses.

Some courses have subject specific requirements and these will be noted on relevant course pages.

A QQI Level 5 award or equivalent in a relevant subject area is the standard entry requirement for Level 6 Advanced Certificate courses.

Good News Regarding Your Course Fees 2023-2024

In August 2022 Monaghan Institute and CMETB announced plans to significantly reduce fees on full time courses. This means that your course fees have been reduced to a maximum of €200. If you have a Medical Card/Social Welfare Payment, the fee will be €150. This fee includes all course materials, exam fees, toolkits, and uniforms.

Additional courses:
First Aid Responder, and Handling and Lifting course fees of €240 are also fully funded by Monaghan Institute and CMETB.

Full-time learners may be eligible to apply for PLC maintenance grants, which are means tested. For further details, visit www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie where applications can be made online or downloaded.

You can apply online now. Applications close in October each year and reopen for the next academic year in January.

Is this course right for you?
The course is designed to introduce the theory and practice of Mental Health Support, to encourage learners to explore and develop their knowledge of social issues, psychology and specific issues for the younger generation within society. This course also offers an opportunity to gain an insight into the process mental health recovery.

What will I study?
The course focuses on a range of subjects relevant to employment within mental health services. Learners will develop an array of personal and interpersonal skills for work in a variety of community settings. Work experience within social care settings forms an integral part of this course, with emphasis on communication and team working skills. One day per week and a block placement of three weeks is allocated, to enable the learner to gain practical experience in their chosen field.
