The FdEng in Engineering (with Specialisms) has an industry focused approach, where graduates develop an extensive range of professional knowledge and technical skills. The programme has been designed in a more applied nature, and aligns with the needs of the local and regional engineering sector. Demand for Manufacturing and Engineering graduates is extremely high, and in particular there is demand for those with level and 4 and 5 qualifications. Entry Requirements

Entrants should have passes in 4 different subjects including grade C/4 or above in GCSE Maths and English (or approved equivalent) and hold a related Level 3 qualification(s) equating to 64 UCAS points.

Careers / Further progression

Progression Opportunities
Completion of this Foundation Degree will facilitate progression to higher level roles within the engineering sector. Students are also in a position to articulate into year two of an associated Honours Degree at Ulster University (eg BEng Hons Mechatronics) provided they meet the entrance criteria: BEng Hons Mechatronic Engineering, BEng Hons Mechanical Engineering (Belfast), and BEng Hons Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (Magee). Students can progress to a BEng (Hons) in Engineering (Top Up) within SWC, validated by The Open University. There are a number of alternative Higher Education Institutions offering part-time and full time top ups to Level 6 Degrees.

Course Content
This programme has been designed to ensure graduates develop the skills and attributes to contribute in a meaningful way to local and regional engineering companies. There is a focus on developing the broad engineering skills in mathematical and scientific principles, underpinned by a practical and applied approach to developing technical, professional and 21st century skills which are informed by, and aligned with, the needs of industry. The programme aims to instil a sense of enquiry, problem solving, and pragmatism through the integration of project based learning, industry relevant teaching and assessment and an introduction to future systems which will ensure a ‘work ready’ and sought after graduate.

All modules are compulsory.

Assessment is varied and linked to industry relevant qualities and will include written reports and assignments, CAD drawings, individual and group presentations, class tests, laboratory reports and formal, end-of-semester examinations.
