This module is an 18-week part-time programme and it’s delivered part time in a flexible manner through blended or online learning to allow people to gain important skills without taking a considerable period away from the labour market and family life.

Part-time classes will typically run once per week for 2 hours and here is a breakdown of the total hours.

Entry Requirements

Applicants under 23 need a Leaving Certificate with 5 passes or a QQI Level 6 equivalent. Applicants over the age of 23 can apply on the basis of age and experience. Galway Business School also has an active RPL policy.

You will be asked to provide the following documents at the application stage:
• GBS Application Form
• Proof of age – Copy of Identification (Passport/Drivers Licence/Birth Certificate)
• Detailed CV – presenting a working history
• References Details of any training completed Certificates for qualifications, training courses etc. Professional licenses/registrations or membership of professional organisations
• As part of the application process learners will be asked to attend an informal interview with GBS Academic Staff.

Career progression
After completing this module, you can progress on to a career in business or management in SMEs or multinational organisations. If you would like to further your academic career, you can choose to continue you studies through our Bachelor of Business programme where students would be exempted from this module within the degree course.

You will be introduced to the concept and role of Human Resource Management (HRM) within organisations. You will study about the role and scope of the HRM function within contemporary organisations and learn to effectively manage HR in a way that supports staff and your business strategy.

If you are interested in a career in human resource management or management consultancy, this course for you. You’ll examine the nature of work and explore employment relations and human resource management in changing national and international markets.

This module is critical for managers in functional areas to understand how to manage the human resource to achieve organisational goals.

In order to be able to harness and align the efforts of people in organisations, it’s necessary to understand the areas of HRM and how they work and are inter-linked in contemporary organisations. The focus is on the people aspect of business and explore how the relationship between employers and employees can be managed to the best advantage of both parties.

Module Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you’ll be able to:
• Contrast the disciplines of Personnel Management and Human Resource Management.
• Critically investigate the role of the main HRM functions in strategic succession planning.
• Critically evaluate the employment relations within organisations.
• Identify the implication of legislation governing the employment relationship.
• Explain the development of compensation and benefits approaches and reward management in contemporary organisations.
• Critically analyse the current topical issues in the management of work environments

What to expect
The module will be delivered through a series of lectures, the focus of which will be on methods that encourage your active engagement, critical thinking and practical application.

The course will incorporate case studies and practical modern examples to:
• highlight the complexity and diversity of the management of human resources within organisations
• equip students with practical and valuable HRM know-how.
You’ll be expected to review current debates through independent reading and study for assignment and assessment. You should also expect weekly participation through class debate and involvement in small group discussions that will ensure continuous learning and assessment.

Human Resource Management is a vital area of employability in any sector. COVID-19 has highlighted the strategic importance of HRM in managing a crisis that is first and foremost about people.

Our main goal is to provide a skills-focused response to employment issues and increase the employment prospects of our graduates. You’ll learn critical HRM management skills that will help you understand how to manage the human resource capital to achieve organisational goals. You can progress to a career in HRM in SME’s or a multinational organisation.
