This is a Pre-Garda course aimed at students who wish to apply to become a member of an Garda Síochána, as well as those looking to take up employment in security.

1 year full-time.

Entry Requirements

Five passes in the Leaving Certificate on Ordinary Level papers at Grade D or better or four passes at least two of which are on Higher Level papers at Grade D or better. Passes must be obtained in English and either Accounting or Mathematics. Leaving Certificate Applied with Distinction grade. Mature students are most welcome to apply.

There are no points requirements for entry to any PLC course.

Applicants apply online directly to the college using our application form. Places on programmes are limited, early application and registration is advisable.

Careers / Further progression

Progression
Students who successfully complete this course may gain entry to Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme.

Students are eligible to apply to PSA for license for Door Security and Static Guarding. This licence may be used for gaining employment abroad.

The QQI Level 5 Award in Security Studies (5M2110) qualification is recognised by the Security Institute of Ireland.

The College welcomes applications from international students provided that such students satisfy all the requirements of the immigration authorities and are deemed eligible by the Department of Education and Skills to participate in our courses. We have many international students attending programmes in the college at the present time and their presence contributes greatly to the life of the college in terms of richness and diversity.

Means-tested maintenance grants are available to eligible students attending approved full-time courses of further education in approved Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) centres, of which Plunket College of Further Education is one. Applications can be made online to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.susi.ie.

Course Description
The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills associated with studying towards and working in Security, focusing on the requirements of An Garda Síochána. The course enables students to develop the practical and theoretical skills and knowledge required in their chosen area of work and study. Throughout their period of training, students complete work placements with recognised security companies at music concerts, sporting events and other public events.

This course has been designed to meet the needs of the security industry in line with the terms of the Private Security Services Act 2004. This course is of particular relevance to students who are interested in a career in An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, Prison Services or the Private Security Industry.
