This one year course is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work under supervision in providing support in a variety of Healthcare settings or to progress to further and or higher education and training.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Facilitate an understanding of the needs of the older person in relation to the maintenance of their independence, dignity, respect, self esteem and choice.

Develop communication, intellectual, practical and caring skills to respond effectively and with empathy to the needs of the older person.

Create an understanding of current and emerging legislation that applies to the care of the older person.

Raise awareness of the need for personal and professional development while working with older people and their families.

Entry Requirements

Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners) *Each provider may have additional requirements, not outlined above.

Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.

Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

EMPLOYMENT/PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates from the course can secure employment as Healthcare Assistants in a variety of care settings in the private or public sector.

Graduates can progress to QQI Level 6 Healthcare Services Supervisory Management Skills in Central College Limerick. Graduates can also access a range of related courses in Institutes of Technology and Universities.
