Entry Requirements

Education: NFQ Level 5 in a relevant discipline when accessing a Level 6 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 6 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners) *Each provider may have additional requirements, not outlined above.

Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.

Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course and be able to exercise initiative and independence when carrying out course activities

Learning Outcomes

Employability Statement
The successful completion of the QQI Level 6 award in Equine Breeding will enable the applicant to work in a supervisory role in a stud. Applicants will be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of equine breeding skills and pasture management together with theoretical and abstract thinking concepts related to breeding horses, horse conformation and pasture management.

Maintenance Grant Scheme (SUSI)
The Department of Education and Skills provides a means-tested maintenance grant for learners attending full time further education. Information regarding eligibility and application details is available at www.studentfinance.ie

Back to Education Allowance
The Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) is a scheme for unemployed people, lone parents and people with disabilities who are getting certain payments from the Department of Social Protection.

The allowance can be paid to people who wish to enrol in approved second or third level courses of education. BTEA is not an unemployment payment. Participants get a standard rate of payment which is not means tested. If you are unemployed, parenting alone or have a disability and are getting certain payments from the Department of Social Protection, you may apply to take part in the scheme through your Social Welfare Office.

Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme
The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) is an educational opportunities scheme for unemployed persons which are funded by the Department of Education and Skills with assistance from the European Social Fund. This scheme gives you a second chance to go back to full time education and training. It allows you to keep your social welfare allowances while attending your full time course in the college. All applicants must be 21 years or over to qualify.

Who Qualifies for VTOS?
Adults over 21 years of age and have been receiving social welfare benefits for at least 6 months (156 days).

What allowances are payable?
If eligible and accepted on the scheme, students continue to get full Social Welfare Entitlements plus course fees, childcare. Some lunch and travel expenses may also be paid for.
