This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and competence to demonstrate and practice clear understanding of the ethical, legal and personal issues relating to appropriate boundaries in the workplace.

Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 5 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 6 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

An internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.

The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, set to accept cookies and pop-ups.

Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader, to view content.

Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.

Careers / Further progression

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Health and Social Care.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and competence to demonstrate and practice clear understanding of the ethical, legal and personal issues relating to appropriate boundaries in the workplace.

Through this programme you will discover how to:
Define the ethos (underlying beliefs and values) of your organisation

Outline the key procedures, protocols and policies of your organisation which ensure that professional relations are maintained

Explain ones own role and limitations within an organisation

Explain the potential effects of blurred boundaries(client/trainee dependency, vulnerability of staff, investing too much of ones self etc)

Develop an awareness of the following components of non-verbal communication - Eye contact- Body language- Proximity- Gestures- Dress- Touch

Define the concept of ethics and confidentiality and describe ethical behaviours in a variety of workplace situations

Summarise the principles of the Data Protection Act(1988 and 2003) and Freedom of Information Act(1997 and 2003)

Explain the different levels of confidentiality between team members, between one professional and another and between staff and client

Define the concept of team (communication, negotiation and problem-solving) and the role of teamwork within your own organisation

Understand the value of teamwork and how it supports team members in achieving organisational goals

Define the role of the client/trainee and other personnel within the organisation

Recognise the roles of persons external to the organisation and the appropriate utilisation of their skills and expertise

Outline the importance of initiating and maintaining positive boundaries within the context of working with clients, trainees, colleagues and external persons

Discuss cultural variations in the use and interpretation of these components

Identify the effects of using non-verbal communication inappropriately

Explain the nature of a healthy emotional relationship in the work setting

Discuss the necessity of detachment in working with clients in a work setting

Outline specific limitations in relation to confidentiality(suicide ideation, allegations of abuse etc)

Assignment
An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a detailed, easy to follow, brief with specific guidelines given to you by your tutor. It is a form of continuous assessment.

Learner Record
A learner record is a self-reported record by you, in which you are required to describe specific learning experiences, activities, responses, skills acquired. You will compile a personal logbook/journal/diary/daily diary/ record.

Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%
