The Supply Chain Management Institute in partnership with the University of Limerick have developed Ireland’s first apprenticeship with a level 9 qualification, the Master of Science in Supply Chain Operations (MSc). This programme is run in conjunction with our industry partners IPICS. The focus of a Supply Chain Manager is on the efficient and effective management of the production network of Industry 4.0. The DJEI Enterprise 2025 Report states that global value networks are resulting in the progressive disaggregation of supply chains and creating new ecosystems involving multi-dimensional partnerships between companies, suppliers, competitors and research institutes in different locations throughout the world. A Supply Chain Manager needs to be able to aggregate and manage these various physical and virtual value chains to maximise the competitiveness of the company. Stepping above procurement and scheduling, transport and logistics the Supply Chain Manager in Industry 4.0 needs to be able to manage activities across the value chain, including: headquarters, shared services/global business centres, customer contact/technical support, research and development, and geographically dispersed production.

The purpose of this programme is to develop the apprentices’ knowledge and equip them to recognise and assess supply chain management with specific reference to organisational performance. They will also be in a position to evaluate and proactively influence the impact of upstream and downstream factors on supply chain performance.

Supply Chain Managers perform a crucial, senior role within their company. They manage the delivery of products and services across the entire supply chain; from raw materials to end users.

Developed by industry for industry, this is a work based education programme which supports the development of the Supply Chain knowledge base amongst practitioners in organisations. It combines learning in the workplace with learning online through the University of Limerick.

How it Works
The modules in this two-year programme are delivered via blended learning. A central interactive platform hosts the complete syllabus, and students can access course materials anytime and anywhere. Only one module will run at any one time, and each taught module will run for a period of five weeks. This gives the students the benefit of focusing their time and thinking exclusively on one area of supply chain management at each stage.

Virtual classrooms and online tutorials from subject matter experts

Collaborative group work in virtual teams

Summer boot camp at the University of Limerick

A strong emphasis on directed project work, including a work based thesis which spans three semesters and allowing participants to spend more time applying the learning concepts in the context of their organisation.

Participation in a ‘Community of Practice’. This will allow participants to interact and engage in peer-to-peer learning activities around the academic content.

Support from an Industry Mentor within the company throughout the apprenticeship.

A dedicated project coordinator to support participants.
